Whoo Hooo!! I hope you didn't have to pay that outrageous amount. It is a shame you were hassled so much and at each turn it seems. :(
The irony of how concerned you were about the headlights before you got pulled over for it makes me want to cry.
Sorry I have been away from LJ so long. I should have been there for you, but I have never had to deal with that sort of thing...I wouldn't have been much help except for virtual hugs.
I did end up paying $178. Adding the wear and tear on my car for two round trips to court, the total comes to ~$260. Still better than $358, right? Especially when you consider that when I drove out the first time, to be put on the court calendar, it turned out someone had already put me on it. So if I had decided the wear-and-tear/waste-of-time/hassle wasn't worth it and just mailed in the $358... I'm sure I would have gotten another letter saying "Thanks for the payment. You still owe us $5000 for failing to appear on that court date we fabricated for you."
I'm not kidding. I saw a lot of those $5000 fines handed out while I was waiting my turn to speak to the judge. When my number came up, I quickly explained that I got the headlight fixed immediately and sent in the correction as soon as I was able. I simply could not get the information I needed in time. The judge (looking over my paperwork) said, "You did get it fixed. You sent in a check, too. What's the--" Then he looked at the postmark, rolled his eyes, and cut my fine in half. Plus, he took the misdemeanor off my record. Did I forget to mention that I was a criminal for a minute there?
